power brake booster

I think my booster is bad, I want to replace it, it has the clap band style on the car now. I notice that there are several different ones that fit 68 cougar, one is made by bendix and does not have the clamp. Is there a difference between the two in fit and operation. The bolt pattern looks the same. Thanks Pauly

There is no difference in fit or operation, I think that you will find that the one with the clamp band is more expensive, but if this is not the case, go for the clamp band.

The clamp band or Midland has a larger diameter diaphragm inside that some say gives a better ‘power’ feeling. The Bendix will be a lot easier to get, most parts stores have them. For the Midland you will have to send it to a rebuilder because very few people returned their cores for parts stores to have them. I had one rebuilt by taking it to a NAPA store and they sent it out to their rebuilder. You can put in a request to RockAuto and be on a waiting list for a rebuilt one. Be prepared to pay a $200+ core charge.

Midland (band) uses a spacer between the master and booster, Bendix does not. If you use a Bendix make sure it is from a 1969 Cougar/Mustang only. The 70 has a different push rod. Best thing is to send your booster to the best rebuilder around, Dewey at Power Brake Booster Exchange. Here is a link.

There is only one midland booster that is correct for your 67-8, you cannot go by what the auto parts stores and ebay tell you. Here is a link to ours,

Here is a link to ebay misc booster listings, notice the vast array of boosters? Read the fine print, many say “may not look like unit pictured”

If your booster is in nice condition and no rust I would vote for having the original rebuilt and returned to the original car.
I just bought a rebuilt booster and I can tell that it was real rusty and they sandblasted it, and that made great big craters in the outside finish.
Mine is so bad that I would have had to fill the craters with filler to make it nice and smooth.

I also have to wonder about the integrity of the units ability to hold vac. pressure before one of those craters rusts just a bit more in the future.
This bothers me and I am going to find another unit or go for a more modern version before I put the car on the road.
