power steering cylinder D&A

I could not get the rod removed from my cylinder. Yes I did get the snap ring out but alas not further progress. I will search the net but thought I would ponder here.

I don’t think you can get it out… I sure couldn’t, but the good news is that the part that really wears out is the seal pack. There are two seals and some spacers. Replace these and the leaks will go away unless the rod is pitted.

How hard is the cylinder to rebuild or “repack” ? I have leaks on both the control valve and the cylinder. I was going to replace both as a winter project. I plan on upgrading to the 5/16 control valve but would consider a rebuild of the steering cylinder if is not to much involved vs. new. Which is a better route to go?
Thanks,
Steven

I thought it was pretty easy to repack. I pulled the driver side wheel, and unbolted the rod from the frame end bracket. I pulled the remains of the old boot, and then used a pick with a very sharp point to dig out the seals and spacers. It was a little tedious to get everything out, but the new parts went in really easy. I put up with leaks for a long time thinking it would be hard to do. Turns out to be one of the more rewarding fixes if you hate leaks. Be sure to put a now accordion boot on. I got the reseal kit from Rock Auto, and the boot from Scott Drake (any Mustang or Cougar vendor will have it)

Thanks fot the info. I will try repacking with a new boot.
