So
I put power steering fluid in my pump instead of ATF.
I know I know! Now it’s wining.
What’s the best way to drain the system so I can put ATF in so the wining will stop
Power steering fluid is ATF, and ATF is p/s fluid,
Both are DEX 111 …
One way to drain is to pull the return hose and drain all fluid from canister, then bump engine over(do not start) until fluid is out of cylinder and hoses, then hook up hose, re-fill with type F trans fluid, start engine and add enough to come to bottom of dip stick.
Ford ATF is a different mix than anything marked Power Steering Fluid. Any of the other products will cause leaks and failure as you have found. Easy way to drain is to just put the front of the car on jackstands and disconnect the pressure and return hoses at the control valve.
K thanks guys. I’ll let you know if it stops the wining nose. Busy right now but when I have some free time
Years ago I rigged up something that fed new fluid into the pump while the old fluid was collected in a 5 gallon bucket. As I recall it involved a tap from a wine box. I am trying to find the thread…
You guys are killing me. Now I need to verify what is in my power steering. I have leaks but no pump noise that I know of. PO has had me scratching my head several times. So better check.
I would probably use a cheap manual pump ($9 at Wal-mart) to remove as much as you can, then disconnect the pressure line and spin it by hand to drain out the rest.
And contrary to what some other people have said, PS fluid is NOT the same as type F. They do have some similarities, but the stock Ford pumps really need the anti-foaming agents of the Type F formula. Foamy fluid makes a lot of heat and causes problems.
As to leaks, you might need to rebuild it. They probably will not magically disappear even if you put the proper fluid back in.
Wouldn’t it unhook the return line?
Don’t understand what you are asking.
To drain the power steering. Wouldn’t it be easier to just unhook the low pressure return line to flush the system?
If you filled it with type F and then dumped it 2 or 3 times, it would pretty much be all type F at that point.
