Power steering hoses?

Is this something I can buy locally?
Or do I need to find them through specialty store?
They seem to be leaking.

Try NAPA or NPD. I would suggest taking a close look and determining for sure whats leaking as there are many places the leak could be coming from before throwing money at it.

Give the full power steering linkage a good cleaning. Then run the engine and look for what is leaking. Also a lot of parts store hoses do not fit well. I recommend WCCC for good parts.

Thank you both.

I just went through that same thing. Mine was leaking from the hydraulic cylinder. It would basically spray fluid when you turned the wheel.

I replaced it with a rebuilt unit, which failed the next day. They sent me a new one under warranty, but I had to put down a $100 deposit until they got my core back. Second time around it seems to be good, but in retrospect I definitely should have gone with the new Made in the USA cylinder.

The “economy” short hoses were a terrible fit. Between their poor quality and the terrible threads on the first rebuilt slave cylinder, I ruined one of them. I used the Scott Drake set the second time around, and I also threaded all the connections before bolting the cylinder in place, and it turned out much better.

John’s Mustang had the Scott Drake hoses. WCCC has the OEM hoses, but they’re very pricey.

Thanks. Would you mind posting links to the new power steering and hoses?

The scott drake pair of short hoses for the cyl are pretty good, not exact, but close & fit very well compared w/ junk we all have had to deal with. I just started using BlueDot hoses. The are exact replacement, and fit amazingly well. Ya prices are crazy, but compared to time wasted on trying to get the incorrect generic hoses to fit & not leak later.
I have had 3 failures of the hose to fitting crimps on high pressure hoses of the “one size fits all”.

P.S. beware of the "new repop cyl’s as they are junk & have no internal stop (or a durable stop) as they will spit the rod out & all the fluid during a full turn…

Here’s the Scott Drake hoses – far superior to the economy hoses for about $15 more.

Here’s the high quality ram cylinder in case you need one of those too.

Edit: I noticed WCCC is out of stock, here’s the link at John’s: https://www.johnsmustang.com/1965-1970-mustang-power-steering-cylinder-new-usa

Thank you both!
If power steering is working fine… should I ONLY look for leaks and fix as I go?

Or consider a full replacement?

Mine was still working even when the ram cylinder was spewing fluid, but I was losing it as fast as I could pour it in. I did all my hoses first not realizing it was the cylinder. They probably needed to be changed anyway, but it would have saved me about $150 had I been smart enough to figure out what was really leaking before diving in.

Definitely do a clean-up and wipedown, then take a look to see where it’s leaking and you probably only need to replace that hose or part.

Short hoses you almost need to go with something quality like the Scott Drakes hoses. The pressure and return hoses you can get away with auto store versions, but they’re also not a great fit (I had to spend a lot of time tweaking mine so it didn’t contact the pitman arm at full lock). If you can swing it you won’t regret the higher quality hoses.

Might also consider doing the big block/1969+ hose routing to get them away from the exhaust manifolds.

Great to know. Thanks.

I just went under the car and there was one drip on the ground. I wiped everything down and didn’t see any leaks.
The power steering fluid is full.

Should I just monitor it for the next week?

Have you rtied tightening all the hose connections?

No. I’ll try that next.

You’ve had a lot of stuff in and out of that engine bay. There’s always the chance that moving the hoses around just loosened up the connections.
