Has anyone on here rebuilt their power steering pump? How hard or easy was it? Mine has just started to leak, and since it is just about winter time, I think I will add power steering woes to my list of things to do for winter.
I have rebuilt my 69 power Ford steering pump. The TRW (I think the other pump that came with 69’s is TRW) may be different. For me it is easy peasy and just takes a little time. However, I have the tools, ability and a shop. So to fill you in, you basically have a three piece pump body and what wears in the actual pump the most is the side plates. They wear and get scored (some people would call it galled). So you need to clean up those surfaces. I did it on a surface grinder here at my shop. If you have no access to a shop they can be resurfaced by placing a piece of glass on a flat table with sand paper (400 ish grit) on it and sand them flat. Be sure to use a figure 8 pattern to keep things even. Then you have the shaft and bushing. You can press out the bushing and replace but you need to have a good shaft. My shaft was fine, bushing was worn so I up graded to a aluminum bronze bushing that I turned up on our lathe. You can buy the normal bushings but I don’t remember where.
The leak can be from the shaft seal, fittings or the pump housing itself. The pump housing basically presses into the tank.
You can buy the pump and housing new and rebuilt and put it back together your self as well.
Mine has worked fine for two years but it still has a little whine to it like the original ones did. Someday I might look into the whine but hey, it sounds like my 69 from back in high school.
I can recommend powersteering.com in Springfield, MO. Easy and fast if you don’t mind shipping. He turned mine around in under two weeks. He offers an optional detailing service if you want it to look as good as it pumps.
Best to leave it to the professionals. While not complicated, it does require some special tools to get the pulley off, etc.

Although Dan calls it a rebuild, really he restoring these parts to better than new condition, they will look and perform as brand new. The cost is very reasonable, and the turnaround time simply amazing.

Cardone is manufacturing NEW pumps! Prices are all over the place. I think I paid like $125. Worth every penny. They are not making the 1970 pump with the offset pump connection so I bought nos internals and rebuilt mine. Tried their NEW pump on my '73 F250 and it was Perfect! NO NOISE. Make sure you bleed the system properly.
