Primer question

So my 69 needs some body work and definitely a paint job. I would like to sand down some spots that have a little rust and would want to primer them. Is there a good rattle can primer that I can use in the garage that will protect the metal from surface rust? And what kind self etching, epoxy, etc.

I’m re-doing my daily driver as we speak. I wanted to go the same route you are going, I just ordered this to give it a try. My research came up with positive results, so I figured I’d try it. Good luck, not a whole in the way of a good primer in an aerosol can…

No matter what you put on it now will have to be removed when it comes time to actually paint your car. When you do actually paint the car the first coat of primer is the most important since it failing will cost you your paint job. So the rattle can primer that you choose now is not that important IMO. I would find something decent that kind of matches the finish that is on the car now.

Buy a $20 Harbor Freight paint gun. Borrow a small compressor if needed and use a good epoxy type primer!! If you buy "Good " rattle cans you will spend more money for a lesser product!! I would do that even for a temp. repair.

I agree!

I used SPI epoxy primer, it’s cheap and easy to spray. You would be better off using a paint brush to put on real epoxy primer than the “best” rattle can “epoxy” primer. Epoxy is two parts, and when you mix them they WILL harden whether they are in a spray can or on your car, so there’s no such thing as 2K spray can primer. AND when you sand the epoxy, if you accidentally sand through to bare metal, DO NOT think you can just touch it up with rattle can primer and cover it with paint! Ask me how I know this.

Eastwood offers a product in a spray can that has 2 parts. Press a button on the bottom to release the 2 parts internally. Not sure how long it is usable…
