Man that looks nice , did you media blast all that? Scrape and wire brush?. I’d like yo get mine to look like that someday. What type paint did you use?
Thanks Steve
Laying on my back with a scraper and wire brush. For 5 straight days.
Never been so dirty or miserable!
Good morning folks,
There is a ground wire pigtail that comes out of my intermittent wiper switch. Does anyone know where this ground connects? I cannot figure it out from my factory wiring schematics.
Any help much appreciated!
Tom
The wire is simply a ground and is not needed when the switch is installed in a metal dash. I had the same question on mine.
Thank you! The '71 dash is a plastic shell with a partial metal inner frame. I’ll have to inspect the switch mount to see if it goes through the metal or just plastic.
The wiper switch mounts to a small metal plate along with the cigarette lighter. The plate has the provisions in it for the small light bulb to light up the switch. This plate in turn will then mount to the dash frame.

Thanks Calicat and Randy - you saved me an exploratory and highly uncomfortable trip under the dash!

Which vendors sell a HIGH quality speedometer cable for the '71-73 Cats with 4 speed toploader?
I realize most current service cables are 80" and longer than OEM, but I recently bought a cable off eBay (brand unknown) that is a piece of junk.
- It does not securely clip to the speedometer
- The core was FAR too long to allow the gear to be installed. I had to cut the core with a Dremel to install the gear.
Who sells a QUALITY cable? The 80" length is fine - I was able to route it in a way that looked fine and kept it away from hazards (headers, etc)
Are 1971 Cougar and Mustang seats the same under the upholstery?
Need to recover the seats, but there’s no way I’m spending the money on the correct Cougar seat covers.
Will 71 Mustang high-back covers interchange?
Thay have the same frames in both. So yes, thay should.
Added Green LED bulbs to the dash.
Found some reasonably priced type 57 and 194 replacements on Amazon and upgraded the instrument cluster, radio, heater control.
Under $10 for a set of 10. Antline brand. There was NO WAY I was going to spend $70-80 for those Hipoparts bulbs!
They are bright and make the gauges highly legible. My night vision has gotten very poor and the gauges were always hard to read even with brand new incandescent bulbs.
The dimmer still works, but only in “steps” versus the linear adjustment with the OEM bulbs
This digital picture really exaggerates the color - they aren’t quite so “alien green” in person…
Thank you, is the foam the same as well?
The car is running! For the first time since 2017…
Great oil pressure, temperature steady at 195, good idle quality and nice exhaust lope.
Very happy.
AWESOME! Well done, and congratulations!
Thanks Man, I wish the forum allowed me to post video of the occasion!
You can definitely load it to YouTube and link to it
Thanks Bill!
I’ve always favored genuine Ford or Autolite/Motorcraft parts for our classics.
However, I’ve noticed that Motorcraft DH6 black distributor caps fit the distributor very poorly. The last 2-3 caps I’ve bought fit very loosely and even with the clips fastened, the entire cap could rock side to side on the distributor.
Had an old stock Borg Warner CP154P black distributor cap in stock, and decided to give it a try. Fits perfectly and VERY securely. Absolutely NO movement on the distributor. The cap seems more rugged and of thicker material than the Motorcraft.
Added bonus, the Borg Warner cap is about 1/3 the price of the Motorcraft.
Anyone else notice poor fit with the Motorcraft DH6 caps?
I had the same problem, but a NOS Autolite distributor cap fit great!
The Autolite DH6 is a spendy cap indeed!
Ran them on my '70 Torino Cobra and `69 R-Code but figured the Motorcraft was the next best thing.
While timing the motor in our `71, I put a little pressure on the cap and heard the rotor actually contact the inside of the cap!
