I’m looking for advice on the correct paint finish (gloss, satin, matte?) to put down on the rim lip of the factory style 14" steel wheels per the pictures. On my '68 two of the rims are original and the others are reproductions. When I removed the trim rings my youngest son commented that it looked cool. So I may run the wheels without trim rings if I can get the lip looking decent. Else I can just slap the trim rings back on at a later date. I went with Milestar 225 70 R14 tires. A bit more economical then Coopers or BF Goodrich option and I like the look.
Original
In years past some of the brands paint would hold up to heat and I would bake them (wheels not anything else) and that seemed to improve the life of the paint and how well it held up
I used engine paint in hopes it would be more resistant to chemicals and temps. Duplicolor DE1635 Semi-gloss black worked well for me. The wheels looked so nice that I hated to put the trim rings back on and scratch the paint up.
I know what you mean. I am guessing I will keep it like this for at least this season. Maybe longer. Here’s the result. I went the Dupilcolor engine/wheel paint route as well.
