Proportioning Valve Not Booping

Hello folks. Thanks to Don’s video and WCCC’s rebuild kit, I got around to addressing my leaking proportioning valve rebuild. I followed his video as best I could… in the video it mentions that the o-rings (some are square/flat of course) have red dots on them to tell if they are sitting proper. However, my kit rings have no such red markings.

I mention this as when I re-inserted the piston with the new rings and new spring from the kit, and tried to give it a test ‘boop’ in the cylinder, it does not bounce back up as Don indicates in the video. I lubed the cylinder with some brake fluid, and of I ran a wire brush inside the cylinder to make it nice and clean. So I don’t think there’s anything blocking it.

I can only think of 2 things going on here (been wrong before!)

  1. The rings are inside out and somehow just off enough to prevent smooth operation.

  2. that’s just how it is… and when the rings wear in a smidge the piston will operate as intended

I saw some posts in 2022 here but no mention of inside out rings … or what to do if ‘booping’ doesn’t result in a happy piston.

Any advice is much appreciated!

I thought this video and photos might help:

For anyone running into this, I fixed it. Just used a little transmission assembly lube and then the piston bounced back up happily. Booping restored! I also had the pleasure of speaking with Don @ WCCC and he confirmed I’d be ok and that a little wear in was normal.
