pulley sizing for power steering pump

Is there a larger diameter pulley for the OEM type power steering pump that works with the original style V-belts?

Of course, a longer belt would probably be necessary if the pump runs out of room to move once in the engine.

The stock unit is super light when it works. Power steering is ok, but is like a little bit less power.

Is it a Cougar? If so what year? What size engine? Does it have AC or not? Lots of variables affect power steering pump pulley selection.

It originally had AC but I’m not planning on putting that back. The only other accessories are the alternator and water pump.

The power steering pump is by itself in a fairly open area. There’s plenty of clearance where it is. I could put in something twice the physical size of the pump and it wouldn’t hit anything.

I just think it’s over boosted, especially when you’re driving over 70 mph. It gets just much more sensitive then I like.

What year? What engine?

It’s a 1968 with the original 302 engine block topped with GT-40 heads and an Edelbrock performer 289 intake.

Sure, the Borgeson unit will work, but it’s one Grand and involves cutting the original tilt away steering column back a few inches at the bottom & some think that’s extreme.

If you’re going to repair the power steering system, it’s a great time for modifications & a different pulley isn’t that expensive.

In terms of actually bolting it up, you can see for miles and miles. Any pulley size will physically install.

The range of adjustment the pump can be mounted on is very generous indeed.

It’s not uncommon to install under driven or over driven pulleys on belt driven accessories for various reasons on V8 engines…if you can find who makes the part!!

The '67 Shelby GT350 Mustang pulley will slow down the pump and give you better steering feel. Try SEMO https://semomustang.com ask to see a 7AC Power steering pulley.

Guess what?

It’s not as dead as I thought. It seems that increasing engine room makes it come back to life.

Maybe it’s spinning…to slow?

If anything, that means a smaller pulley, not a bigger one.

It would be nice if Saginaw made a pump that could upgrade the stock system but I doubt it.

We have every variation listed and it will guide you AC or no

Belt is slipping.

That’s a good idea to check, v belts have a tendency to do get loose and slip more then a serp belt does.
