Anyone seen anything like this? Came out of my neighbors 351. They were brand new, along with the cam, rocker arms, springs, lifters. All the pushrods are like this. Roller rocker arms, if that matters. He kept wondering why he had to adjust the valves all the time. Looking for ideas. Pushrod aren’t clogged.
Looks like either he has an alignment issue or oiling issue. Pedestal mount rocker arms? Running guide plates? Are the guide plates adjusted correctly? Could be oiling issue but I see no discoloration. I would check the alignment first.
Over the years I have had a few FE pushrods look like the first picture. They usually click or clack because of the looseness. The problem was frozen lifters that just kept slamming the pushrod. The rocker arm ends would be splayed out also.
You could have the wrong length push tubes as well. This would cause the ball of the push tube to side contact the cup in the rocker arm at full lift instead of seat in the cup of the rocker arm properly at full lift.
When I saw the first pic the first thing that came to my mind was a heat treat issue. Seems to uniform to be alignment, etc. What sucks is that you may never know without testing or checking alignment. The need to keep adjusting might be the best clue.
My thought was heat treatment, too. But, I kind of discounted that. I can’t imagine anyone even selling not treated pushrods. And, the push rods were purchased with the cam, rocker arms and springs together as a “kit”. I think he said Elgin was the company. The rockers arms aren’t worn. There are no guide plates for the rods. And, it’s all the pushrods at the rocker arm end. No wear on the lifter end. Really weird.
