I have decided to sell my R code GT-E. I am sure that most here know how rare and desirable this car is. It is one of 20 XR7 GT-E’s produced with the C6 automatic transmission. Interestingly, it is the only R code GT-E produced in Grecian Gold. Therefore it is the only gold GT-E with the functional ram air hood scoop and hood stripe, truly one of a kind.

I have owned the car for approximately four years and drive it weekly when the weather permits. It is a very nice running and driving car, everything works as it should. The 428 cobra jet block has been replaced, probably sometime early in his life with a late 1969 block. I haven’t had the valve covers off to check the date codes on the heads. The carburetor appears to be the original date coded Holley. All of the original ram air parts are present and a previous owner has added a reproduction smog system. The transmission has a cast iron tail shaft but the servo is marked with a D. The interior was re-stitched in leather while owned by one of the previous owners and still presents well. The odometer shows 62,500 miles, I believe these to be correct and original. The car comes with a binder full of receipts etc. from previous owners that support this claim. The original floors, frame rails and the general underside of the car is very solid and original. Most of the body panels will require some rust repair but I believe can all be saved without replacement. The paint is poor and looks like it was done many years ago. The car is definitely worth a full scale restoration at some point. For now though, it can be driven and enjoyed as it is.

I have collected some of the rare parts that were missing when I acquired the car and they will be included with the sale. These include a June 1968 dated standard bore block, new Scott Fuller reproduction GT-E exhaust tips, a correct colour carpet set and a rare original starter delay relay. The reproduction radial Goodyear Polyglas tires are already installed on the car.

This must be the GTE that was on Bring a Trailer in 2020? Looks like a very cool car. Lots of pictures on that listing.

Yes, that is correct. It is a very cool car and I did bid on it when it was on Bring a Trailer, but was not successful. I did have some history with the winning bidder and was able to purchase the car from him about a year later. It made the trip from Alberta to New York before coming back to British Columbia.

Have you had any of the rust repaired?

No, I haven’t done anything with the body of the car. Other than having the new tires installed about a year ago, I have basically just been driving and enjoying the car as it is. Just basic maintenance and some carburetor work, it runs and drives very well.

When I purchased the car my intention was to eventually give it the full restoration I believe it deserves. I tracked down the parts mentioned over the last few years and was just waiting for the right time. About two years ago I had the opportunity to buy back a 69 R code convertible that I first bought in 1986. I owned the car for 10 years and sold it to a fellow that I kept in touch with and was able to re-purchase it 27 years later. A lot of sentimental value with that car and just can’t keep both of them, as much as I would like to! Interestingly both cars have identical drivetrains. My hope is that the GT-E goes to someone who can enjoy it as much as I have and hopefully give it that restoration someday.
