I figured that putting new upholstery on my 67 seats would be a good winter project up here in upstate NY. I did a set in the past for a 69 Mustang that I used to have.
I started with the front passenger seat. The recovering included new foam. All went well. Very slight wrinkles, but they should work out over time. Here is a picture.
Here’s my question, it seems almost nearly impossible to put the seat backs on with the new upholstery. The new covers have an added padding to the top and it makes it extra thick. As this picture shows, I’ve located all of the spring clips locations.
I had the same issue with my 70. I ended up covering the clip mounting area with wide tape to protect the vinyl and marking exactly where the clip prongs were located. Used a rubber mallet and gave a whack. They popped right in and haven’t moved in 2 years. Hitting directly on top of the clip was essential. And yes I’m afraid of ever having to remove them.
Thanks guys.
I don’t think I can even get the top ones in the right area to whack them in. I might make a template out of hardboard with my laser cutter and clamp it to the frame and leave it there for a while to stretch/compress the material. Maybe spray glue first?
