Rear bumper

I have a early model 70 eliminator my rear bumper brackets are not aligning with the holes in the bumper are the 70 and 69 rear bumpers the same .the brackets don’t seem to match the contour of the back of the bumper any ideas thanks Dan

69 and 70 use the same bumper and brackets. Be sure you have the brackets right side up. I think they are the same right to left.

They are the same, BUT the 67/8 look kinda the same & can be confused w/ 69/70. Don’t forget the wave washers that go between the bracket & the bumper. The chrome bolt has a square base (carriage style), so the wave washer has to allow for the square base. Thus, the washer can be installed upside down. Also as WCCC has mentioned don’t tighten too much, as you can distort the bumper.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys are you saying the 67 and 68 bumpers look the same or the brackets I hope I got the right bumper and the wrong brackets

Sorry - The brackets- not the bumpers.

Thanks I think the washers might help alignment

Here’s the definitive discussion about wave washers ( for the 1969 - 70 Mustang - which would apply to the Cougar as well ) :

Cannot speak for Mustangs but Cougars ALWAYS got the wavy washers and they only go on in one direction.

Mustangs were built on the same line as the cougar and used the same washers as part of the bumper mounting hardware
