While reassembling my '68 XR-7, I found this brown wire behind the glove box.
I scoured my wiring diagram and the nearest I can figure, this is for the non-existent (in my car) rear defrost.
Anyone have any other ideas as to where this might go?

Let it be. All 68 tach Mustangs and Cougars have this wire, regardless of rear defrost.
I figured. Thanks Midlife!
Rear defog is a triangle shaped plug. If I remember correctly it’s kind of an orangy red color.
I think the PO cut the plug off and covered the end with some sort of rubbery goop.
Can I use that wire to turn on an amp?
Probably not; it has a buried resistor wire embedded in its circuitry.
Ahh. Bummer. Oh well. Thanks Midlife.
That is an interesting idea! You could use the wire to feed a power amp if you use a switch (or jumper) to connect the 257 (yellow) power wire to the 186 (brown) direct feed wire. The 260 (red/black) wire has a 23 ohm resistor top operate the defogger motor on the slow speed.
Recognize that these are only 18 gauge wires, so limit the current drawn to under 5 Amps.
I don’t want to power the amp with that wire, just use it to turn the amp on. I would run a dedicated fused power line from the battery to power it.
You may very well use that wire for an relay input.
Not sure what your running for a head unit but newer 80’s up usually have a blue or purple wire on them which is designed to power up amps/power antennas when the head unit is turned on. “Power up” meaning signal to relay in the amp to close the 12V battery power circuit which powers the amp.
