Rear end fluid

Hello I have a 8" 2.79 rear end in my 1968 cougar tag# wcz-v1. I have it all apart and its ready to be reassembled I have everything figured out except for the fluid.
What grade does it use and how much???
Thank you in advance

Dave, I don’t know what grade you have to use (I’m interested on knowing myself) but the U.S measure capacity is 4 pints and the Imperial measure capacity is 3-1/5 pints (I have know idea what that is). One other note, in my '68 shop manual it says under 8" conventional (1): (1) All conventional axles use ESW-M2C105-A lubricant (C6AZ-19580-B) plus 4 oz. of ESW-M2C58-A (C1AA-19B546-A) (I don’t know what the 4 oz item is, sorry). John

Thanks John Im half way there.

Start with one quart of 80/90 wt. gear lube, and use a small wire as a dip stick bent so it will fit into the rear cavity, and add more fluid until it is about 1/2 inch from top of fill hole.
Edit- the 4oz item is used if the rear has a locker with clutch pak.

Thanks for the info.

I don’t think you want to touch the rear end fluid, or as some people call it… diarrhea.

Personally, I like to fill the rear until it over flows the fill hole. Yes, use 80/90.

Im a GM guy from the day I was born and can I know how to build a sbc without thinking about it. But I couldnt pass up this 1968 cougar(texas car) and Im now learning a whole new would with one of the the great cars from mercury. Thanks again for the Help. This isnt my first question and it for sure will not be the last.
