Rear Interior Panels -- What Kind of Plastic?

Help! I’m trying to repair the Rear Interior Panels before sending them to the upholstery shop and the usual solutions (fiberglass resin, JB Weld) aren’t working. What are they made of?

I’ve repaired some using fiberglass Mat cut to size and using 3M emblem adhesive to saturate the glass.

I have been dealing with the same problem on the passenger side on my 67. Had a guy use fiberglass made it to thick to use. If you go that route keep it on the thin side.

Is this the part between the window and the package tray?
Mine broke recently. Wondered if there were replacement parts.

Another Cougar part that should be reproduced. Those plastic panel are now 50 yrs old and brittle.

I would try this. I use it to repair all kinds of boat stuff.

It doesn’t stick instantly, so you will need to clamp the broken pieces together for a few hours until it sets.

It also works great for filling holes. You just put masking tape under the hole, then mix that stuff up and slather it into the hole. It’s sandable and paintable once it sets.

I had several cracks in mine and I used fiberglass wallboard joint tape to cover the splits/cracks on the backside and then used Locktite 2 part fast curing epoxy glue covering all the tape. What I like about using the epoxy is it settles and sets smoothly over the repaired area. That was 7 years ago and they are still fine.

We have repros coming out very soon. Modern ABS flexible plastic.

Rock on! I’ll finally get to replace my brittle ones that have speaker holes cut in them. I have replacements in off-color, but both of those are also in need of at least some moderate repair. Will you have the replacement vinyl available, or would that be better off ordered through a fabric/vinyl shop? My vinyl has an equally large speaker hole (ha) so it’s not reusable, of course.

If you are ordering your seat kit from us we can request extras yardage but other than that you are on your own.

I recently used a two part glue made by Locktite. It had a preactivator, and then the glue. It was on the plastic defuser on my AC blower behind the console. Wasn’t getting anything to stick to that plastic either (JB weld, plastic epoxy) The plastic broke out around the metal tab on the underside. It held using the Locktite.

I used 1-2 layers of fiberglass with epoxy resin. Bought at a surfboard manufacturing supply shop. Just make sure you really scuff the panels or it wont stick well. Very difficult to do without cracking more when the car has been sitting in the desert for decades.

I better selk my extras before the price drops on them. Any timeline for their release?

If these panels are made out of ABS plastic like the dash bezels are, you can make an ABS slurry/paste by mixing pieces of ABS plastic with Acetone. The acetone with melt down the ABS plastic into a paste. Spread a little inside the seam before putting the pieces together then reinforce it a little over the top of the seam on each side. I repaired my cracked dash bezel this way and it makes a strong bond once the acetone evaporates from the paste and hardens back into a plastic. Several youtube videos on making ABS cement. I have a few pieces of that panel at home i can test it on to see how it works.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I was experimenting with fiberglass cloth and clear Gorilla glue. That worked if the surface was scuffed or sanded before application. The West Marine Plastic Boat Repair Kit looks interesting, I’m going to try that on the other panel.

I’m glad to hear that reproduction panels are planned. Too bad we can’t get the vinyl (upholstery) panels reproduced as well.

Thanks again!

Fantastic!
How soon is soon? Weeks? Months? Years?

I’m in no rush. But want to know when to check back to order.

Great news, mine are both toast like most. I’ve been dreading on how to take care of those
