A fellow Ford guy asked me last night what to look for on a rebuilt 428 long block. Rebuilt by a reputable stock car engine builder who I know from back in the day (I used to do his blocks when I was a machinist).
I know about the backwards raised “C” in the bellhousing area, does this indicate a Cobra Jet? What about the heads? I know there are multiple bolt patterns on the exhaust and some have both some just one. What casting numbers to look for on the block, heads? I also remember the “SUPER” imprint near the oil filter on an SCJ. That 's about all I know.
The asking price is $1600, reasonable?
Thanks for any advice or help in what to look for.
The 428 CJ in my Talladega I had years ago had “352” cast into the driver’s side block right below the deck where the head bolts on.This spot being right behind the power steering pump. I think all FE’s from 352 on had this but don’t hold me to that.
I suppose the price seems reasonable if all is correct. That 428 can be expensive to put together.
Bob, if it has CJ heads, they have a unique bolt pattern on the exhaust side. What are the numbers on the heads. Also, I might be interested in this if it isn’t picked up your friend.
$1600 is not a reasonable price to pay for a rebuilt long block. It is way too cheap. He should insist on paying more. The machine work on the heads, crank, rods and the professional assembly well exceeds $1600 and we have not yet accounted for the iron! To purchase a rebuilt long block shall cost you at lease $5500. The FE is Fooking Expensive and labled as such for a reason.
