The Krylon red oxide spray works very good followed by a coat of Krylon clear gloss enamel. The factory red oxide was very glossy.

Agreed you need a somewhat glossy not your usual flat red oxide primer but something that reproduces the look of an epoxy primer. Not many options with rattle cans.
Also if want a more original looking final product since your already there, don’t forget the fresh machined spots on the main case and pinion retainer for the full factory look while your at it. Face of the housing where the gasket attaches was left unpainted also
