Greetings everyone. I am in the process of getting my 72 ready for paint. I am trying to remove the trunk lock cylinder to ensure a good paint job. The workshop manuals indicate a screw holding it in, but it appears that on mine, there is a rivet holding the panel in which gives access to the area I need to reach. I am sure that others have run across this when restoring their cars. Any helpful suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Yes, kind of a pain. There can be a rivet holding that part to the bottom lip of the trunk. Change to the rivet was probably a running change in Dearborn, in 1972.
You need to drill that rivot out as the piece that the rivot is holding in place is what holds the lock cylinder in place. Once you have the rivot drilled out then you need to gently start to pry the lip of that piece away from the decklid. The rivoted piece will only pull out a short distance but once you get you moved the lock cylinder will be able to be removed.

Randy, thank you and Cougar CJ for the response. I will drill out the rivet and remove the cylinder
