Removing Window Chrome Trim

I need to remove the vinyl top on my 1969 XR7. It was poorly installed and I need to inspect for any rust damage. I am scared!!! Need some pointers on how best to take on this endeavor. It is a Arizona car with no apparent rust damage.

  1. What is the safest way to remove the front and rear window trim. It is in good condition and I would like to keep it that way.

  2. Any technique tips on peeling the vinyl off.

  3. Any technique tips on removing the front and rear windows - I would like to save them if possible.

I appreciate any insights into taking this task on for the first time.

I think the reason you haven’t gotten a reply is, that it is not that hard of a job, but it would be hard to explain all that is involved, if this is the only one you plan on doing, I would let a glass company come and remove the glass and trim, then you can rip into the cover. Have you looked on you tube for how to. If I were there I would be glad to show you.

Following as I have an almost identical situation. Halbey, are you looking at replacing the vinyl (if so, with which product) or painting the roof?

I plan on painting. Sounds like nearly the same amount of work either way but prefer the hardtop and seems less prone to further rust issues down the road. I have watched a few youtubes on 66 -68 mustangs but sounds like there are different trim attachments depending on the year. Like to know what my 69 has for trim attachments and how to access.

Thanks for the youtube link

Are the trim above the door held with clips that have to be accessed behind the headliner?

No clips, they just pry off, that clip from you tube I posted shows how to remove them, I use a bottle opener with tape over the end to protect the trim.

Thanks for the tip on removing the door trim.
