Repairing accordion fresh air sock to intake air cleaner on '73 Cougar 351C

The Problem: 8’’ to 10" long square accordion style tubing connects air cleaner to fresh air plastic or metal tube coming from the grill. This tube is a flat metal coil covered with a very thin cloth cover. At each end is a built-in plastic clip which tightens the tube and snaps in place. To remove, carefully divide the barbs holding the clip. Current status: Outside cover deteriorated allowing hot air to intake vs. outside cooler air. No replacement part found after search of usual outlets. Solution: I found at Walmart online, a black temp resistant cloth tape used for wrapping wire harness’ in an engine compartment. The roll is 49’ long x 1 1/4" wide x .01 thick and has a mastic to stick to itself during wrapping. I made a small rotisserie and attached it 6" above my work bench to allow wrapping the tape clockwise starting a one end without having to cut strips. Depending upon the condition of your original part, some improvising may be required so you have a sturdy tube body to hold the tape. I stuffed the inside of the tube with foam to keep its shape. If your end clips are broken, you will have to figure it out. END RESULT. The wrapped tube now keeps engine compartment hot air out and fresh air going to the air intake. My engine rpm immediately settled down running smoother than before. The Walmart site did not list an Item# other than the brand name MLINS BLK HARNESS TAPE. It is polyester non-woven cloth tape. It cost about $9 plus shipping to your shop.
