Replaced the speedo cable and still have the bouncing

That was actually more work than I bargained for, and the new cable did not fix the bouncing speedometer.

So any other ideas to fix the speedometer? Thx

Did you check the condition of the plastic driven gear for the cable inside of the transmission ?

The driven gear appeared to be in good shape

Take a good look at the INSIDE of the driven gear. If the cable puts too much tension on the nylon gears the nylon can give and strip out the inside of the gear. When that happens it can cause the gear to “skip” on the cable and give you a bounce.

Either way, the gears are only a few bucks and are easy to replace.

Thx. I’ll try that next. Gotta pull the gear to count the teeth so I get the correct gear.

Sounds like an “apple cored” gear.

Did you pull the center element and grease it? The new cables come dry and need to be lubed. Stick the center in a tub of grease then put it back in the sheathing.

What kind of grease? Thx

I pulled the driven gear, hoping to find it was apple cored but it looks really good. Still, I will replace it and see if that helps.

Just about any kind - I use Mobil #28 but whatever you use for wheel bearings ought to work.

I was under the impression that white lithium grease (almost a powder) was the thing to use, but that was many years ago.

This is one of the many curious things about these projects, so many different ways to skin the cat.

The shop manual recommends some very light lube. WCCC recommends powdered graphite. Royce recommends dipping the cable into a tub of wheel bearing grease. Another member suggests white lithium, but in one video that is the only grease NOT recommended as it tends to harden over time.

Another video showed the rear end up on jacks, rear wheels turning and speedo cable turning, speedo head disconnected from the speedometer. Then the guy sprays lube down inside the cable housing. The spinning cable works the lube down the length of the unit. Kinda genious.

So lots of ways to go. I have time to figure something out before the new driven gear arrives. Btw - the recommended driven gear does not look like the gear I pulled off, but I have been assured it will work.

I have always used powdered graphite on speedo cables. My thinking was it was less messy, stayed cleaner, and didn’t thicken as much at cold temps. But my speedo still bounces at 35 mph no matter what I do to the cable or gear. Either I need to try grease, or something is going on with the speedo head itself.

Back in the distant past there was an attachment made specifically for lubricating speedo cables. It used LPS #3 as the lubricant.

I’ve always used wheel bearing grease and had great success with it. Never did buy the thing from LPS.

Yeah, powdered graphite is what I was thinking of, not lithium grease. My bad.

Advanced age means you sometimes mis-remember things…now where did I put my walker?

I did try some silicone spray I use on my garage door, but it really didn’t look like much. So I’m gonna go with Royce’s method of wheel bearing grease. Thx

Same here. Would have been nice if the repo cable I bought would have mentioned the need to lubricate it on the package.

Me three. Maybe the thicker grease will help dampen out some of the bounciness.

Folks, I received my new driven gear. Lubed up the spring with wheel bearing grease and reinstalled the cable. That took care of the bouncing, but the speedo is quite inaccurate, as it was before this journey. It reads 8-10 mph higher than correct.

Is there a fix for that? Thx.

Well it’s always something, huh? Sounds like it could be an incorrect driven gear. Same number of teeth as old gear?
