Replacing a coolant temp sender in a 351?

So to replace a coolant temp sender (little thing that feeds a temp gauge) in a 351, you have to drain the coolant, right? Is there some kinda trick to it, a way to do it without draining the coolant? I’m guessing it’s a good time to replace the coolant, maybe even flush the system? I kinda wanted to just drop a new one in, but doesn’t seem like it works that way.

Whenever I have to do something like that, I just drain enough coolant to get the level below the sending unit. You don’t have to drain the entire system. If the coolant still looks good (vibrant green and not rusty), put it back in. This should go without saying, but make sure to use a clean container.

X2… no need to drain it all… just to below the upper radiator hose would be enough.

I guess I am low tech. I remove the sender and let what ever wants to come out, come out.

LMAO! I’ve done that too. I guess it just depends on how I feel about the car I’m working on at the moment.

But in this case, I was trying to help “teach.”

Well is there any harm in coolant running out of the sender hole and down the block and into a pan that’s strategically placed to catch it? Is it gonna corrode the engine or anything? Seems easier than opening and closing a valve to drain the system. Heh.
