Restoration -> D0OB 1970-71 Battery Heat Shield repro

Hey Fellahs, not sure if this was previously posted or not.

For those of us with a '70 CJ, finding a correct battery heat shield for a reasonable price can be challenging. Larry Hoffman is in the final stretch of reproducing the D0OB heat shield.

He is taking names for interest in pre-orders.

Mike, someone needs to ask him to open it up to non members of the 428CJ forum.

D’oh! I’ll send him an email and see if he’ll post here.

I emailed Larry Hoffman (LTHLMH@EMBARQMAIL.COM) and he gave me permission to duplicate his post here…

New exact repo D0OB battery heatshield. White part is SLA prototype and black is nice used. I am looking for some interest before tooling is made. This is very detailed down to the way the eng# is not perfect and original Talc filled poly pro material. Keep in mind the prototype is 3-D printed so small details like the eng# do not show well. I have been in the torino side of the hobby for a long time and consider many of the old time mustang guys friends. Many will let you know that I say what I do and do what I say. I am simply looking for people with interest to let me know - no money down, no commitment just please follow through if you commit. This is not just a pretty part to get points at the show it served a genuine purpose, and that purpose serves a driven car better than a show car. Getting this part right with the right materials cost more, but cost will be $150 with free shipping in the U.S. for anyone who pre-orders. If I cannot get at least 30 takers I simply cannot do it. If I can it will be ready before Ford Carlisle.
Thanks,
Larry Hoffman

Feb 2016 Larry posted this update:

having the second and hopefully the last 3-D printed SLA prototype done now, will try to post pics when done. Still looking for for interest. Email me at > LTHLMH@EMBARQMAIL.COM > if you want one. thanks Larry H

May 20th, 2016 Larry posted this update:

had the 2nd prototype done and still had some fine tuning, waited 2 months for the changes and am having the 3rd and final prototype done now, I will have it and an original at ford carlisle space P-18, it is under my friend Ed Bennett. I have to put off the mold build for a while to gather some more interest. Please contact me if interested. Thanks Larry Hoffman > LTHLMH@EMBARQMAIL.COM >

Larry has posted some updates on the D0OB battery heat shield back in May over on the Boss and CJ forums:

Final prototype, note that it is 3-D printed part to show dimensions not the actual final product, everything is done just need to get more interest so if you have any please contact me,you are not paying anything, you are simply letting me know that you would buy. Price will be $150 and shipped free in the U.S. if you let me know before . Thanks Larry Hoffman > LTHLMH@EMBARQMAIL.COM >

Larry also posted on update just yesterday:

It has been awhile since I have updated this as from the last prototype I seen some fine tuning on the eng.#'s and the two ramps on the inside front that needed widened, this took awhile to get done. At this point I had the 2-D and 3-D prints on file and did not know when or if I wanted to proceed judging from the interest I received. A smart business man would walk away but I quess I am not that smart, but I have always made parts that interested me ,I have quite a few under my belt and I have made profit on very little,I figure I am going to be spending money and time anyway but would be nice to at least break even though. The mold is being made now and hoping for samples before columbus super swap, production likely in Dec. which would have finish parts by Jan. I am still holding on to the pricing with free shipping deal that I said but only If you contact me before they are done,I am only going to do a small run and do not know if I will wholesale or not,I may just sell them myself to help pay for the tooling, maybe ebay but the cost will be higher to cover fees ect. For the money you are getting alot of workmanship and devotion to detail, even the same material as original. All that and made in Pa. !!! What more could you want? please email at > LTHLMH@EMBARQMAIL.COM > to reserve and hope for your support. thanks Larry Hoffman

I don’t know him but I think (from what I have read) that Larry is a cool guy! Hope he is successful with the part. I think he will be but it will probably not come in the form of his required number of pre-orders. Rather, over time as people who will do anything/pay any price to have a correct appearing part for their valuable car come along and happen to find that this part was made by a forward thinker.

These have been available from another company for years. Did he quit making them?
And why just post on the 428 forum for potential buyers? Some of us with 351s have the group 27 battery. It’s quite limiting to post to a single audience.

The reproductions are the C7OB-10A682-B version, which is not quite the same as the D0OB-10A682-A. Most notably, the C7 has a different upper lip / top edge, making it easily identifiable as “wrong” when installed on a '70 car.

I think he is a Torino guy, and was only thinking of the 428CJ folks when he posted. Probably didn’t realize how many other cars / equipment variations the D0OB would be correct for. I know I had no idea it was used by all these different cars. Maybe we should count ourselves lucky that we heard about it at all - he could have just posted on the Torino / Fairlane forums and called it good, and just relied on word of mouth to do the rest. As it is, I’m doing what I can to help spread the word so he gets more orders so these can get built

Other applications: the C7OB shield was also used on 1968 and 1969 Fairlanes and Torinos (351 and 390 with air conditioning or 428) and 1968 and 1969 non-428 Mustangs (351 and 390 with air conditioning). The D0OB shield was also used on 1970 and 1971 Torinos and Fairlanes, and Falcons assembled after January 1970. Lincoln-Mercury applications for the C7OB shield include 1968 and 1969 Comet, Montego, and Cougar (390 with air conditioning). The 1975 edition of the Lincoln-Mercury Master Parts Catalog doesn’t include the 428 engine in 1968 or 1969, but I suspect that’s an error of omission. The D0OB shield was also used on 1970 and 1971 Comet, Montego, and Cougar (351, 428, and 429 with air conditioning) and 1972 Cougar with air conditioning.
