Does anyone know if the motor trend article on restoring a 69 era mustang 9” rear end apply to a Cougar. I believe they all came from the plant.
I believe that Sterling built all of the Ford rear ends for production.
Thanks for the reply. Ya, I was just assuming it would be the same as the mustang. But I haven’t found anything different to say it’s not. I just wanted to know for sure before restoring it to the level of the motor trend article.
When the rear end for your car was built as Scott says it was built at the Sterling plant and they built rear axles for every Ford product there. It was not specific to any one product line - Sterling in those days built axles for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury and the workers had no idea which one it would be installed in.
Thanks Royce! Appreciate the help.
Just be aware (if your going for all the details) not all of the paint daubs and markings will be the same. Some/most were applied at Sterling (differed from year or month to month sometimes) but others were plant specific. So Check before you start marking stuff. Next guys thay see your work will assume that you did all of your homework so IMO better none/or less, than incorrect.
The cougar is a 1969 with a build date of 9-23-68.
I don’t know what markings match that timeframe for the rear assembly.
The markings are very much part of the process. If you don’t know what the original markings were it makes no sense to follow the pictures in a magazine of a restored one.
Having difficulty finding information on markings on rear axles produced at Ford Sterling Heights in 1968. Trying to determine time frame from production of axle to installation on vehicle.
Have searched a lot of sites but haven’t found anything concrete. Does anyone have some info they can share.
Thank you
If you don’t know what the original markings were you restore it with no markings.
About ready to clean the housing. This will be fun. Like an archaeological dig. Removing layer by layer of dirt, undercoat , repaint to the original paint. At least the motor trend article gives you an idea of what might be uncovered. Maybe nothing. It is what it is.
