Anyone tried to do a stealth retrofit of an Autometer Pro Comp 5152 3 3/8 mechanical 120mph speedometer into the original cluster of a '69? (Or perhaps another type/model)
I searched but could not find any threads on the subject.
Except for the trip meter button being offset to the left it looks like I might be able to mount an original face to the speedo and make it look original.
I’m on my second original speedo and tired of the pulsing needle and the very finicky trip reset button, but I still love the original look. I tried a second new cable too.
I just found an adapter (equus 9872) for $26 that converts the Autometer screw on speedo cable end to the Ford push on style. One little problem solved!
No responses yet so I am thinking no one has tried the conversion in this way yet…
Guess I’ll just have to buy the speedo along with the adapter and get to figuring out a way to adapt the old face to it along with a lever assembly of some sort to allow the use of the original trip reset button with the left offset button on the new speedo.
I got the new speedometer and adapter in the mail the other day and there are going to be some challenges.
The Bezel holding the lens on the new speedo is crimped on and will have to be cut off.
The Odometer area and trip meter area are closer to the center of the speedo and not more toward the outside edges like the original speedo.
The trip reset on the new speedo is a twist reset instead of a push reset like on the original.
I found a program that will allow me to make a new gauge face decal, but I am still bouncing around ideas of how to get an identical face plate sticker to the original made. I will also have to form a new metal face plate so I can cut the two rectangular holes for the Odometer and trip odometer locations that match the locations on the new speedometer.
….and then there is the little needle swap and mounting the newly formed face plate to the new speedo and putting it all into the original cluster housing so the original lens can be used along with converting the centered push reset button to the eft offset twist reset knob… lots of fun in my future!
Any one know of a better new speedometer starting point to use? (Make/Model) I still want a mechanical an not an electric gauge.
