Looking to get some info on what products recommended for rust converter or inhibitor.
I have a few areas of surface rust, some pitting but no holes through any panels.
I was going to sand blast the areas and get as much as I can out of the metal.
then prep with a rust inhibitor or convertor product? any recommendations on this step?
then epoxy prime.
Home Depot and Lowes and virtually every auto part store, Harbor Freight etc. sell Evaporust. The gel version works on vertical panels. It is amazing, it removes rust entirely and it is bio - degradable and non toxic. If used after sandblasting it will be the perfect preparation for ordinary epoxy primers that are used in automotive paint systems.
I stay as far as possible from Eastwood. They make nothing. They sell re - packaged or re - labeled products made by other companies. Anything Eastwood sells can be purchased for less from other sources.
Evaporust is proof that God loves old cars. Non-toxic, works fast and well, spray it on your yard when it loses effectiveness and the iron in it will kill the moss and green up the grass
It may be to late to help Mark but I will add my recommendations. I like Krud Kutter Rust Converter for large areas with surface rust. It is easy to brush or spray and cleans up with water. A gallon is about $25.00 and lasts a long time. If you spray it wear a respirator since it contains phosphoric acid. Rustoleum Rust Reformer is good for more heavily rusted spots
I think you have the right plan. I have used Evaporust with great success. It is carried by most auto part stores and also Harbor Freight. Sandblasting first, then using Evaporust, and finally a two part epoxy primer such as DP90LF (PPG product) will ensure that rust never returns.
Just adding my 3 cents to this. I found a great product I use after a good re wheel cleaning.
Has anyone used Ospho? I apply it with a cheap throw away brush of the size you need. Let it sit for awhile and the product chemically alters rust (iron oxcide) and changed it to an inert compound of Iron Phosphate. It will change the rust color to a black color and a paint ready surface. I’ve been using it for years! It comes in a 25 or so ounce bottle that will last you a long time.
Is it known if Evaporust can be diluted? I was planning to find or build a box big enough to submerge some bigger parts like back seat frames and maybe even a door.
If it can only be used strait, I might have to consider a 55 gallon drum.
