Rust removal discovery

I don’t know if anyone else has tried this, but it worked really well for me. The back of my dash had the usual surface rust from 40+ years of wear. I was contemplating how to get rid of it so I tried some aluminum acid sprayed on it and let sit for 15 minutes and then pressure washed it. The rust just blew off with the pressure washer! After two applications the back side of the dash looked 90% as good as new (some of the really tough areas still had a slight amount of rust but not much) Just a tip I discovered.

Interesting, but I’m wondering: What is “aluminum acid” and what is it’s “normal” use?

Probably the same thing as any metal etching (bare metal treatment) that one uses before painting…

Which is generally Phosphoric Acid.

I have seen where after cleaning off the rust in this mater will look great for a while, but that clean metal is only for a short time and then it will rust like crazy unless you coat it to seal off the surface.

Wait, are you talking about Coca-Cola?

Oops, my mistake, the “Cheapskate” thread is just below this one… Will have to come back later and discuss the Dodge, its battery connectors, a .79 cent bottle of Coke and the broken shovel handle today. This one even has the shovel-breaking son in it.

The stuff I have is a blend of Phosphoric acid. No doubt it leaves metal bare and vulnerable, but in the places I have used it the metal was bare and exposed to start with, that’s why it rusted in the first place. I did also wash the parts in a baking soda bath and rinse again after the acid treatment. So far I cleaned the internals of the distributor with this method, the vacuum advance (clamp band) and back side of the dash. I will keep posted on the level of rust that shows back up.
