My 68 std cat came from the factory with a decor group saddle interior. The front seats are so brittle that they have begun to split at the seams. I plan on buying a seat cover kit from Don but noticed that the “insert” portion of the seat that kinda gives it the distinctive decor look on my seats is a light tan or saddle. The stripe on the door panels and rear quarters match the seats. I noticed the seat covers Don sells have a dark brown stripe on them that matches my dash pad, but does not go with the door panels, which kinda ruins the flow of the interior. Is my entire interior incorrect, or are the repro’s the wrong color?
Correct your inserts on the seats should match the door inserts and not the dash. I’m sure Don will offer some advise when he sees this. You might have to go to a shop and have them re-used the De’core inserts from your seats on the new covers.
I agree with BossElim69. About 15 years ago I had a '67 standard and needed to get the front Parchment seats redone. The vinyl on the repro covers and the welts/inserts were not an exact match, so I obtained NOS original Parchment yardage, cut out my welts/inserts and took them to have new covers made so I’d have an exact match.
(FYI, the '67 Parchment vinyl has a printed parchment paper or antiqued look to it that is used on the door and quarter trim panels as well, so the “flat” or plain parchment-colored vinyl doesn’t look right next to it. Your saddle interior has the same, so I’d check that out carefully first!)
Don, can you confirm that the color of the decor insert on your kit is incorrect and is brown instead of light saddle or tan? Or did Mercury offer two different colors in 68?
Correct, the 68 should look like yours, not what our picture shows. There was some confusion in the past with our supplier on which colors got matching inserts and which colors got opposing colors, for example the nugget gold 68 decor panels have a very dark insert. When you order from us send this pic and we will make sure our supplier gets it right.
Many of the pictures of upholstery on WCCC’s site are photoshopped to approximate correct colors (we had some seats upholstered in each style, but only in one color - would be pretty involved to actually upholster a seat in every color and style) so this is one that I got wrong. I never realized that '68 had a matching insert, whereas '67 had darker brown inserts. I’ll fix the picture, but we do need to make sure that the manufacturer knows the difference.
