Salvage engine compartment decals

The decal on the passenger shock tower of my 68 cougar is in really nice shape considering it’s age. I’m in the process of wire brushing the engine compartment and repainting it. Is there any way to remove the decal and save it to be applied when I’m done. I could mask it off, but don’t think that’s totally the answer. I know the decals aren’t expensive but it’s the orginall decal so saving it would be nice if possible.
