Scottish Newbie With a 70 XR7

Hi All,
Hope we are all well?
Im Russell, 31 from Scotland and have recently bought my first American classic. Have been in the classic car scene since 14 when I bought my first but have always lusted after a 70 XR7 for a long time now and just before New Year I took delivery of her. Imported in 1990 and put through a full restoration 1990 - 2000 it has led a pamered life since. It shant see a damp or salty road again. It was originally bought in New York and lived in Connecticut until it left the US of A in 1990.
Im utterly smitten with it and it will never part company with me: just want to improve upon it and enjoy it on nice dry summer days. Im a standard lover so it shant be modified as I personally like them the way they came. I know theres lots to do to mine (correct colour airbox, side arch and sill mouldings back on etc). Don at WCCC has been great thus far and ive already got side Cougar scripts and an XR7 rear deck badge en route and plan to buy much more in the coming months!!
Some photos below.
Thanks for looking. Hope to make new friends here.
Kind Regards from Bonny Scotland

Welcome. That is a very nice Cougar!

Hi Les, my sincere thanks for the warm welcome and for the kind comments about my car - much appreciated indeed :slight_smile: Hope you are well Les.

Kind Regards

Russell.

First of all, welcome to the forum! That is one very nice and clean XR7 Cougar. We look forward to seeing you finish up the little details you spoke of, I also like them as they were bought new.

Hi there - sincere thanks for the warm welcome and kind words about my car - very much appreciated indeed :slight_smile: I shall make regular updates - I love taking photos (youd never know above!!) so there will be plenty more to follow of me and the Cat at various car shows and runs out :slight_smile: Your cars above sound fabulous and the one in your signature photo is gorgeous :slight_smile: Im glad im not alone on the standard setup - I plan to get mine as close to factory as I can over the coming years. A Marti report is next on my list of purchases. Kind Regards, Russell. EDIT: I have just checked out your photobucket pics of your 7.0 GT.E - Breathtaking does not do the car justice!! An utter credit to you sir :slight_smile:

Hi Russel -
Welcome aboard! Hank looks to be a most contented kitty in his new surroundings so far from home. He’s a beaut - and one of my very favorite colors!
I know you’ll enjoy every minute spent in, out, and about with him. We’ll be looking forward to lots of pictures and stories from your prowls together.

Welcome to the Classic Cougar Community. It’s great to have another new member. Great looking Cougar with a striking color combonation.
Steven

Dang! Very cool to see a 70. XR7 but no AC and AM radio – rare! Where abouts in Scotland are you? I used to live in Edinburgh when I was a boy.

Hi Gary, Steven, and Allen: sincere thanks for the very warm welcome and nice comments about Hank - really appreciate it :slight_smile: He seems to have settled into life in the UK well - but sometimes feel for him being so far away from his home territory as you say Gary - thankfully theres not too many other Cats about rivalling his territory: its mainly Jaguars over here he watches out for!! I too love the colour (would appreciate a heads up as to what the actual colour is called?) - I like the blue on blue look. Allen, I live just about 8 miles outside Edinburgh in a place called Dalgety Bay (in Fife) - we are situated right down on the water so our sitting room literally looks straight across the water to Edinburgh - I can see the Castle, Arthurs Seat and Leith as we speak :slight_smile: Yes the car didn’t seem to get too many options ticked when new - I quite like that though :slight_smile: Looking forward to investing in a Marti Report to see exactly what he got ordered with :slight_smile: Gary, Steven - your cars in your signatures / avatars look sensational - your little moving sketch made me smile Steven, that’s brilliant.

Thanks again so much for the warm welcome - really is appreciated and I shall be sure to make many updates of our adventures :slight_smile:

Russell you can use the Club of America Vin Decoder to decode your vin/door tag. You’ll then be able to see some facts about your Cougar including the name of the color as long as it’s a factory color. You can also add it to the Cougar database while there.
Steven

Welcome Russ, and thanks for sharing the pics of your sweet '70. Blue on blue is a great combo (my '67 is very similar), it must turn some heads over there.

Enjoy,

Sincere thanks Steven :slight_smile: Unfortunately it just keeps coming up access denied, perhaps I need to pay to join the club first?

Genuine thanks Chris, I really appreciate the warm welcome and lovely comments about my car - much appreciated indeed :slight_smile: It certainly is a head turner - you cant take the car anywhere without toots, waves, stares, points, and people coming over for a chat about the car - its great, I love chatting to people about the car as very few know what it is…I have lost track of the number of “Nice Mustang” comments I have had! :slight_smile:

Welcome to the club, Russ. That’s a beautiful cat and I can imagine it gets plenty of attention. I spent about 6 months in Scotland back in the early 1990’s and I don’t recall seeing any classic American cars.

Sincere thanks for that Yorgle, very much appreciated indeed :slight_smile: Glad you have had the opportunity to see Scotland, its a gorgeous place. I have been to New York about ten years ago and also Vegas in November last year and I must confess to adoring the states. The classic American scene has only really flourished in say the last 15 years or so due to in part I guess the internet. It was always bigger in England, London etc but its taking off up here now. Even though theres now lots of classic American cars over here now, 9 times out of 10 its Mustangs you see at shows - ive always loved the Cougar as its just that bit different and much more me. Your Convertible is gorgeous.

If you post the information on the door data tag here I will decode it for you.

Hi There, sincere thanks for this - I really appreciate your help :slight_smile:
Chassis Number: 0F93H500502
Engine Number: H500502

Sincerest Thanks - hope you are well.

Kind Regards

Russell.

0 =1970
F= Dearborn Assembly plant
93 = XR7 Hardtop
H = 351 2V
5= Mercury

00502 = sequential production number, the 502nd Cougar off the line.

There are additional codes at the bottom of the sticker that will give more information.

Sincere thanks for this, I genuinely really appreciate your help. Unfortunately, I have a funny feeling that when the car was restored and repainted in the 90s it lost its sticker as its not present on the car :frowning: Does this mean I would not be able to get a Marti report to show what the car had when new / or indeed is that now the only way to know in light of the missing sticker? Clearly the chap didn’t take as much care as I personally would have in detailing / preserving crucially important things like the decal. Thanks in advance, Kind Regards, Russell.

You just need the VIN for the Marti Report.

Ah that’s great news, thanks Chris, a Marti Deluxe / Elite is definitely next on the list. Kind Regards, Russell.
