Slow fuel drip near tank

Good afternoon, hope everybody had a good weekend. My 1971 has a slow fuel leak near the tank that needs to be addressed. I haven’t been able to get it up in the air yet but I’m assuming it’s most likely a rubber fuel line from the tank to a hard line. Does that sound right or is there a common issue in that area that I should be aware of?

Just hoping to be prepared and have done some homework at a time so I can fix it right away rather than having to get it on and off the lift a bunch of times.

Thank you.

Yes, the rubber line would be my first look, then look at where the sending unit goes into the tank. If you have a floor jack and jack stand you can lift it up for inspection. While your at it you may want to replace the rubber line (under the master cylinder) 2 of us have had a leak there and on one it caused a fire. :smoke:

Tanks rust from the inside out. Don’t poke at the tank unless you are prepared for a flood.

Thanks for the responses.

I think 3/8 is the usual size for the rubber line?

Fingers crossed the tank is OK.

1971-1973 gas tanks are held in place by straps the same way Ford held the gas tanks in F series trucks for decades. The straps are known to collect dirt and moisture between them and the tank which can cause the tank to rust out. A fairly common problem on the F series trucks so it would be something else to take a look at on your Cougar.
