So
After driving for a few days after finally getting my motor rebuilt and running nice with no issues.
I smell gas while driving mostly on the hwy. There are no leaks and it’s seems to be only while accelerating on the at high speeds (50 mph and up). Is there anything I should check? How do I check to see if the machanical fuel pump is pumping too much fuel. It’s relatively new
check that the fuel tank seam hasn’t split
Is your filler neck hose to tank tight, cracked or leaking fuel into the trunk?
Might want to check the float level in the carb as well.
Check the rubber seal at the rear of the hood. Is it there? If so, is the hood adjusted so that the seal touches the hood and does its job? Either of these problems will result in the experience that you are having.
I’ve checked the gas tank and nothing leaking. I’ve even checked in the trunk. I can smell gas very slight smell.
I’m sure it’s coming from the carburetor. It doesn’t help that it’s a convertible but it shouldn’t smell so much.
And as for the rubber seal at the rear of the hood. Do you mean on the firewall? I do have a gromit missing but the smell is overwhelming sometimes. People that have had rides in the car would say that they can smell gas.
Like I said I’m thinking my Holley 600. It’s never really worked right from new. I don’t know
If the carb is drinking too much gas would I see it in the oil and plugs?
Yes the seal is mounted to the top of the firewall. If the seal is missing or the hood is not adjusted properly you will have gas fumes going directly into the cowl vent regardless of what type of carburetor.
This part:
Check and make sure the washer is on the float sight screw. Check the rubber washer on the metal line that runs to the secondaries. Check the hose clamps on the fuel filter and carb. Check for fuel weeping along the midline of the fuel pump.
You asked in your 1st post how to check if the fuel pump is pumping too much fuel why do you think that is a problem? Also do you know if you have the correct gas tank cap for your car ?
I checked the fuel pressure and it was at 6 pounds pressure. The reason I wondered is because when I first tried to start the motor after I rebuilt it the carb ( brand new) was plugged as I was trying to break in the cam. I since returned that carb because of other issues too. With this new carb the secondary’s weren’t working. Diaframe had collapsed. I don’t know if it was the multiple back fire. Both carb were Holley 600 with vacuum secondary’s. To be honest I’ve had nothing but bad luck with Holley carbs. That’s why I wanted to check the fuel pressure.
As for the runner gasket on the fire wall I’ll take a look
Sounds normal.
If your car should have a vented gas cap and it doesn’t the gas tank and lines will become pressurized to a point where the gas tank can become ballooned this kind of pressure will let fuel find a weak point in the system.
I really don’t know why it smells. But may be the comment about that rubber weather stripping under the hood could be my problem. The smell isn’t red gas smell it’s more like used gas smell. I don’t know if that makes sense but that’s the only way I can explain it
