Solar trickle charger

The new electric car now gets the garage and the 69 Cougar is out in the cold. Have a shiny car cover on it at least.
I don’t have power near the car so I need a trickle charge solution. I thought I would try one of the solar driven ones.
Here’s one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082DCMFZS/
I figure I would cut out part of the cover and put a plastic window into it so that the solar panel could rest on the dashboard, locked in the car to deter theft.
Here’s my question: It has a cigarette lighter attachment. If I connect it to the charger, will it charge the battery? It works for some cars but not all.
Any experience with solar panel charging of car batteries would be appreciated.

Your priorities are backwards.

Run extension cord to electric car and put cougar in garage. (Yes. Get longer cord for electric car charger. )

This isn’t brain surgery.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I’ve never seen that solar charger but it does get good reviews. If you are truly worried about theft, then I guess your solution will work. My first thought was…Run an extension cord and buy a cheap electric trickle charger at Harbor Freight for $5 and you are done.

Consider this however… that electric car will be in the junkyard in 20 years. What’s that Cougar going to be worth? Swap the two cars.

I’m seeing a very serious man card violation here.

The electric car will depreciate to near worthlessness in a few years. No reason to keep it indoors for that.

The Cougar will hold its value if you don’t let the elements ruin it.

Im curious as to the reasoning to kicking the cougar out of the garage in favor of the electric car as well but I was not going to say anything  Gotta agree with these guys tho, leave that cougar parked inside if at all possible! The electric car is much easier to replace and just like your iphone in your pocket will be junk in a few years with new tech replaces it.

I imagine your wife may be like mine and wants her car parked inside as not to deal with the hot or cold weather. I do accommodate her by giving her a space in the garage next to the cougar. However if I need the full garage to tear something apart she parks outside. For these days I made sure to get remote start so she can get the car warmed up or cooled off ahead of time. The nice thing about that electric car is you can program it to cool or warm the cabin at a scheduled time just like remote start.

In a perfect world we would all have big enough garages for all our toys and a corner for the wife to park the family wagon in! :sunglasses:

On the subject of solar panels trickle chargers they will typically work ok until they dont. Most do not seem to be of very good quality or last very long. Here in AZ the sun will cook em pretty quick, especially if left on the dash inside the car.

I don’t think you’ll get much love here by kicking your Cougar convertible outside in New York!!!
Well - maybe you’ll get some tough love.
By the time you trade in the electric car your Cougar will be junk.

Hey Gary, Do you park the Hindenburg outside?

Ok folks, it’s the OP here. I live in a development and would have to run the charge cable across a sidewalk to charge in the parking space outside, which causes obvious liability issues.
I was thinking of getting an oil undercoating to forestall the inevitable resulting rust. Have any of you had experience with doing that?

This after spending a fortune having both rockers and floor pan and etc replaces.
Besides it looks great in its shiny new silver coat. :wall: Pic to come.

Ouch. That’s a tough situation. Maybe rent a storage space for the winter months?

Now we have more info.

Oil undercoating.

Just jack it up on jack stands.

Get some kind of spray oil. Like cooking oil and do it yourself. Get that protective layer on it.

I’ve seen threads that leaking oil pans etc plus
Driving and dirt built up a nice undercoating over time.
