Solenoid (The "I" Terminal) with poor fitting connection

I recently changed the starter on my 1970 cougar XR7 and it’s recommended to replace the old solenoid. I purchased a new solenoid, everything hooked up nicely except the “I” terminal that send voltage to the starter (see below). Any suggestions? The female fitting does not fit flush on the terminal (see below 2nd picture). That is as far as it will go down. I also put in a picture of the original one before I changed it out (1st picture)

If the screw post is too long, you can just moto-tool off the excess length. If the diameter of the screw post is too big, your car is not the right application for the replacement.

I would just clean up and re-use the original if it still worked. The original solenoids last longer than modern repros.

Thanks Calicat, I would love to use the original one. When you say “clean up” the original, do you mean the terminals, nuts, etc? Do I need to open it up and do anything internally? It look completely sealed

If it still works, and assuming your bad starter didn’t short out and damage the internal contacts, I would just clean the rust off the metal surfaces, and polish it up externally.
