Sourcing rear fender trim (and maybe a whole fender)

Hello - hope everybody’s having a good week so far.

My 71 lived at a somewhat tough life before I picked it up, no that she is running and driving OK I would like to start making some progress on some less than awesome prior bodywork.

I’m assuming that nobody makes aftermarket rear fenders for our cars? How about the rubber finishing piece that closes the gap between the body and the fender?

Thanks!

This is what you are looking for, I see that they are out of stock. And I don’t see a reproduction being made.

Looks like it has a ton of filler on it. It also looks like the body line just below the pin strips in my picture below is missing.

It may be hard to find sheet metal for your car. But not impossible. As for the plastic filler; itis made from a kind of man made product called “Unobtainium”. I may have a center section that goes under the trunk lid area, itis grade C as it is warped. The last set of good end pieces I had I sold a long time ago. Keep your eyes on Ebay, Craigslist and by all means call West Coast Classic Cougar.

Good luck with your quest ahd make that 71 sharp. You don’t see many of them.

This is my 71 XR-7. Mostly original paint, top and interior. Lucky to find one that looks this good. But it needed a full mechanical restoration.

Also, you should check with this Craigslist Seller in Eastern Washington state. He has a ton of adds for 71 through 73 parts.

Could that filler piece be 3-d printed?

Thanks for the tip - emailed him.

Will call Don.

I have to admit that I didn’t research this model year properly before I bought it, I assumed parts would be more readily available. Oops.

I might have a used rubber filler piece here, I would need to look to know for sure.

I don’t see why not. You would need a excellent one to use for a scan and a big enough 3D printer to do it with. It may be rather expensive for a person to get just 1 done though.

Just spoke to the guy in Washington state, nice guy and he knows the cars, but unfortunately he is not too interested in shipping anything right now.

First of all, hope everybody had a good weekend and is staying safe.

It occurred to me when I was working on another car this weekend that if I had a pattern I could make a fiberglass part for this pretty easily, does anyone have a picture of one off the car or measurements by chance? I suppose I could try to back into it from getting an idea from the other side which is still on the car.

Have you thought about having that 1/4 panel stripped to bare metal and see where your at before thinking of anything else?? I seen people body fill parts for no reason and come to find out it was because they didn’t know how to align body panels… Just a thought if you want to just try and see that for thought.

thanks

Good morning Pat, thanks for the response.

Good idea, thanks for the suggestion.

I’m not in a hurry to get the car painted even though it’s about 3 different colors now. Think I am going to focus on mechanical issues and just drive her a bunch.
