Spare Tires for our vehicles

Just curious. And I hope I’m doing this right. Spare tires. I want one for my car, but I just assume that I just need one to roll the car onto whatever recovery vehicle it gets on. ( I have NO intention of driving ANY distance on something that’s not supposed to be where it’s supposed to be) What kind of apparatus would that be??? I’ve seen these little skinny multi use spares on cars before. You’ve seen em, They’re orange and look like pizza cutter wheels. Is that what I need??? Thanks… You guys in this community are THE BEST.

Why not a full-size spare?

Trunk space. Staggered tires. Not ever gonna be used as a real tire. Cars never gonna take first place in showroom stock category. Etc Etc…

Seems like you’re overthinking this. I use a 14” OEM rim as a spare with stock jack held down with stock hold down. Carry a lug wrench. If I have a flat I’d change it drive home. Spare gets covered with repop vinyl cover. I’m not a “donut” fan.

The orange wheels with thin tires aren’t meant for road use as far as I know. They are for use in shops to move vehicles around.
I’ve got a full sized spare as the 14” steel wheels won’t clear my brakes.

I too would use an original spare. Anything else is gonna stick out like a sore thumb at car shows.

yep those are for mockups and rollers only.

I would just find a cheap wheel and tire combo that is close to the size your running and call it good. Or carry a rope plug kit and a compressor to get home in a pinch

I keep a compressor, small tool kit with needle nose pliers and a tire plug kit in the trunk well. Unless the sidewall gets wrecked, you’re good to go.

Lincolns, birds and fox bodied gt cars came with temporary spares in 15, 16, 17 in size and all different tire size. The unique part of the wheels that they look just like semi gloss black steel wheel but are actually spun aluminum wheels painted . I found a 15 in wheel with a tire size somewhere between the front and rear diameters . You can litterly pick up the tire with one hand and hold your arm straight out . Height in trunk is quite a bit less than a full size spare and with the later tank in our 67 the door cam up 3 or more inches. In 14 yrs of cruzin/touring , used the spare twice, but not on my car!!

I had a 14 inch 1979 tiger paw spare tire when I got mine. I got a 14 inch $50 spare from a tire shop. I still have the jack, wrench etc to get me home.

What I use in my driver, gets me home

I carry a full size spare the same size as my front tires. I have had to use my spare twice in 25 years. It gets me home when needed.

Hasen’t happened yet I can’t rember having a flat in a Cougar. About 40 years.

Yes Hagerty service is great. One time on the way to a show, the muffler decided to collapse on the Cadillac, so i couldn’t make the show. so then puttered into the nearby walmart lot and called Hagerty. shortly after, the nicest driver arrived with his beautiful private flatbed. took us back home and he even helped me get it into the garage.

Hi !

Suggestion for a temporally tire repair to get home or the garage , Some Ferrari used this since they don’t have a lot trunk space, Fix-a-Flat S60420 Aerosol Emergency Flat Tire Repair and Inflator, for Standard Tires, Eco-Friendly Formula, Universal Fit for All Cars, 16 oz.Amazon sell this.

I got a 2007-14 FORD EDGE Wheel 17x4-1/2 Compact Spare Steel wheel on eBay and put a new tire on it. Works fine. Wouldn’t want to drive far on it. Better to put on a back wheel rather than steer with it on the front.

What is that, exactly?

Could always put a spare tire cover over it for the car shows.

Spare tire from modern mustang

As said above, those orange “Guni-wheels” are just to move a project around the shop.

I just gave away my original 14” spare rim with a relatively new tire on it to a buddy who is still running a stock set-up. In its place I had been carrying a 16” space saver spare from a jeep. It’s the same 4.5” bolt circle.

Now that won’t fit either since I upgraded to the Wilwood brakes. After some more research and FB marketplace shopping, I now carry an 18” space saver spare from a 2019 Nissan Rogue. It, too, is the same 4.5” bolt circle. But it’s more than that. It’s the same overall diameter of my rear tires so if I need to run it on the rear to limp home on, it won’t burn up my locker. While it’s very tall, it still fits on the front, even as lowered as it is. The offset is such that it is sucked in far enough that it clears both the inner and outer fenders at full lock in either direction,.so I can limp home on it as a front too… AND it clears the Wilwood brakes. $40 on FB marketplace.
