I posted this over at mc.net but wanted to holler out here also. I need to get this thing on the road. my son is 15 and has his first job & this is his daily driver. the speedo cable broke the other day and the replacement we purchased looked right but was longer 79" the one we took off was 59-1/2". we put the new one in and it didn’t make it a mile before breaking. i figured it was in a bind because of the excess length. took it back and got the only other one they had 63" long. it didn’t make it a half mile before breaking. the gear on the trans end looks fine and if i put apiece of the cable in the drill it turns the speedo freely. what in the H*LL am i doing wrong. 69 std 351W FMX 3:00/1 gears.
Does it always break in the same spot, or in different places?
Anyway, its critical that the cable routing follows a smooth path, with no sharp bends.
Heat is another killer of speedometer cables. Make sure its routed as far away from any exhaust components as possible.
