Speedometer cable replacement

Greetings. - I have the dash pad loose, but there is one trim piece resting in the steering column that is in the way. It looks like I need to take off the column mounted ignition switch to get the trim piece off.

It appears the switch is just held on by two nuts. Is the removal that simple? Any tricks or gotchas? Thx

There is also a roll pin connecting the shaft to the linkage.

Mark the location of the switch prior to removing the nuts, there is a sweet spot for locating the plunger.

Thx. I did plan on breaking out the sharpie. Once those nuts are off, with the switch slide off easily?

I’m confused - what year? For my '70 I can remove the instrument panel without taking out the ignition switch.

Same as yours, 1970. I will attach a photo attempting to show the offending trim piece and the column mounted ignition switch.

Curiously, my shop manuals don’t talk about removing the ignition switch from the steering column, to remove the trim piece, to remove the dash pad, to remove the instrument cluster, to disconnect the speedo cable! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Mine comes out without removing anything other than the plastic collar on the lower half of the steering column and even then I only have to slide that up a couple of inches.

Same thing on mine - easily removable. Odd combination of clearances maybe. Can you pull the steering column bracket bolts and let the column drop to get needed clearance?

Thx fellas. I could prolly do that, but the fact that a couple of members don’t have this issue, tells me I’m doing something wrong.

Do you both have the trim piece I am holding onto?

Yes. I just take out the screws holding it in place, remove the clip inside the steering wheel collar so I can spread it open enough to slide it up towards the steering wheel, then work that trim piece out with a little creative wiggling.
