Hello everyone!
I just completed a 4 speed swap in my 67.
Now the speedometer does not work, and the odometer rolls backward.
Car was originally a 3spd.
The speedometer worked great.
The toploader was out of a 1966 Mustang.
It has a pink speedo drive gear in the tailshaft.
I have installed a new (longer) cable for the 4spd, as well as the opposite rotation gear.
I pulled the cable tonight, looked into the shaft. It looks like a pinkish gear, but the threads appear to opposite of a regular pink gear, per every pic i have seen. Can someone confirm, when looking at the gear, it it is supposed to look like this //// and not \\\ .
The new 3a gear had obvious mesh problem (wrinkled teeth).
I may be wrong, but my fuzzy memory has it that the automagic and manual transmissions have opposite thread polarities. It is easy enough to change the gear on the speedometer cable at the bottom, IIRC. But boy, that’s like 14 years ago…I could very well be wrong.
I suggest that you go to the West Coast Classic Cougars web site and look at the pictures for the driven gears. The gears for four speed manual transmissions are different that those for the three speeds.
One thing I noticed looking at my chassis assembly manual: the big block 3 speed manual has the speedometer cable input on the passenger side, same as the 4 speed manual. You never said which engine you have but I thought this might be relevant.
Thanks for all the input.
I ordered a replacement inner gear. It is opposite of the gear inside the toploader now.
It meshes correctly with the replacement 3a gear I purchased.
Have a question on lubrication of the speedometer cable. It was recommended to drop some lubricant into the cable before reconnecting to the cluster… of course that came after I reassembled the dash. Is that a good recommendation? If so, what kind of lube?
