speedometer repair/restoration

The speedometer in my 69 XR7 (351W 4V/FMX) needs repair/restoration. The needle bounces and the odometer does not turn. The speedometer cable clip was broken at the gauge. Would that be the cause of the needle bounce or stuck odometer? The only other issue is the worn numbers on the Trip Meter. Will a new speedometer cable cure these problems or do I need to get the gauge repaired? Is there any way to bench check the odometer movement using the removed speed cable?

Any recommendations on repair shops?

A bad speedometer cable can cause the needle to bounce.

It will be big money to fix and a good used can be had for very little. We have several but need to test before we put them in inventory. The needle bouncing is the speedo cable.

I can test the speedometer for function and accuracy as well as reface the trip odometer.
