Sure, check for vacuum leaks and give the car a good visual once -over.
Before you have a panic attack, go to the parts store. Buy some gas moisture remover(any brand), pour the whole bottle in the tank, then fill up with gas. I’d suggest the nearest major brand of gas station.
Give that remover time to work, realizing that the engine may run just a tad rough while removing the moisture if in fact there is any in the tank. You’d be surprised how easy it is to get some bad gas.
Do the cheapest and easiest thing first. In a way, that remover can be considered a “mechanic in a can” and those types of products usually don’t work. But then again maybe they can. And that remover certainly can.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I finally got out in the oven that we call the garage tonight to poke around a bit. I didn’t see any obvious vacuum leaks but I did try the headlights, and the eyelids didn’t open on their own…this doesn’t really mean much though since the engine hasn’t run since Sunday.
There does seem to be an overabundance of nastiness all around the outside of the carb that wasn’t there (that I remember) the last time I took the breather lid off. Not sure what to think about that. Looks pretty clean inside.
I’ll dig in deeper in the morning, but if any of you have any more ideas I’m listening!
Did you ever solve this? we have a vacuum gauge sitting in the tool box we hook up for tuning cars and trying to check for vacuum leaks. they aren’t free but it’s not a bad thing to have. I agree with everyone else though, sounds like a vacuum leak
It turned out to be all in the carburetor. I was thinking accelerator pump all along, but it was actually OK. The carb was just full of nastiness. The gas inside it had a foul odor and was brown and disgusting looking. I can’t say if it was because of the Sta-Bil 360 I have been using or just the fact that I don’t drive it enough…or maybe I just got a tankful of crap gas? At any rate, after a carb rebuild it is running better than it was when I thought it was running good! It’s easier to start when hot now, and zero hesitation at takeoff. LOL, in fact I left from a stoplight the other day and barked the tires TOTALLY BY ACCIDENT! I was looking around to be sure no officers were gonna need ‘splainin’ to!
I took the car out for a joy ride again today just to enjoy how great it is running. I got home and thought I’d try the headlights with the engine off and to my dissatisfaction I found that they only open and close with the engine running. That’s my project for tomorrow morning to find that pesky vacuum leak!
At least you have the driveability problem solved and she’s running better. Now that I actually have a voltage regulator that is putting out the correct amount of power, I have a hesitation on tip in, so I will be looking at my carb as well. Man, aren’t those eddy carbs great? Put one on my Stepdad’s car ten years ago, and have yet to have problem with it. I know they get knocked by the Holley guys, but truth be told, they are a far superior carb. More tunable, and more reliable.
It seemed that my whole carb problem was just some nasty gas that got things all clogged up. I thought it was going to be the accelerator pump as Todd suggested, but it looked fine. Good luck with yours!
