Starter Solenoid wiring mess. 1968 XR7

I am trying to figure out how the red wires go back together. Is one of the red wire supposed to have a yellow stripe? I have a new Brown Pigtail, coming for the L/H post. There is also what looks to be a solid black wire, that doesn’t have a home.

This is what it should look like.

Yes, but how do I know which red wires to reconnect?

One red wire is the ammeter lead, so it will have continuity with the 2 pin yellow molded connector that mates with the underdash harness. The other red wire is the proof-out circuit for the low fuel, and it will have continuity with the red wire at the low fuel relay connector. The low fuel red wire goes on the starter side of the starter solenoid.

The picture is a big help but a wiring diagram is also very useful. West Coast Classic Cougars offers a free download.

Tcell, wow that is a mess. I’m afraid that your only touching on one issue. That solenoid looks like it seen its last day. The corrosion is so bad that even if you get wires figured out the resistance will be the next issue.
If you were closer I’d give you one, and help w/ a bunch of harness’s.

Vic(Cougars Unlimited) has repair ends for the 2 wires (red & brown) you need. I’m worried about what looks like a major crack in the shock tower (might be just a run in paint)!!

Please find someone to help you or you might even have a fire!
Post your location so one might be over to get you the help this poor cat & you!

Tcell, I was in your situation due to the PO wiring computer fans under the dash for a “defroster”. He had also hacked up the wiring under the hood, and when I removed the harnesses it looked like there had been at least one fire. I replaced the under dash wiring harness along with the headlight harness and once I replaced everything, I found out that the gauges worked along with all of the interior lights. I got a lot of help from WCCC and the wiring harness that I received had a lot of the ends marked with the item that it connected to. I hope this helps, I know it solved a lot of my car’s issues.
