Starting issues, replaced Starter Solenoid switch

I’ve been having issues for awhile now with my car starting. Initially I thought it was the battery so I replaced it with a known good battery I had in the garage. Still I would just get clicks but once I put the jumper cables on the car would turn over without any issues. I decided to go ahead and replace my starter solenoid switch today. Because I know my battery was down a bit on the charge, I jumped the car again. This time the starter wouldn’t disengage after I turned the car off so I ran around the front and pulled the positive battery cable and the car died. Now when I try to start it, I get a single click that sounds like it’s coming from the starter.

Did I just fry my starter?

It sounds like your new switch is stuck.put your old switch back on and see if you have the same problem.a battery that is low can cause some funny things to happen.you should really charge that battery first.

Old relay is back in and now I’m getting multiple clicks when trying to start with a fully charged battery (even jump start). Started noticing some corrosion on one wire with some exposed strands of wire. Not sure how far I’ll have to go to replace the wire but I plan on crawling under the car when I have more time and checking the wire going from the relay to the starter as well.

On a side note, I noticed when the jumper cables were on the clicking from the relay was “different”. The pitch of the sound was higher (if that makes sense) then the normal “low battery can’t turn over the starter clicking”. I’m not sure what that’s all about but it did concern me.

Sounds like you might have reversed the two plug in wires on the side of the solenoid.

It’s possible I guess but I moved wire by wire from the old to the new solenoid to make sure I didn’t do that exact thing. I’ll have to double check when I have a chance.

EDIT: Is there a good method of bench testing the Starter Solenoid Switch? Google isn’t my friend it seems :s

Ok, so say by chance i did reverse the wiring on the battery and starter posts. :frowning: what damage could i have caused?
