I know torinos and mustang share a lot of the same parts, so I thought I’d throw this out to see if any of you had an idea.
I have a '70 torino manual steering setup im puttin in my '69 torino strip car. I pulled the steering box and wanted to get it professionally rebuilt. I sent an email to http://www.stangerssite.com/ and have yet to hear a response. Anyone know anything about him - precision products? Seems good, but I called twice and sent an email, nothin yet. I have the box boxed up and ready to ship
I use Red Head Steering (redheadsteeringgears.com). They do quality work with fast turn around. You do not have to have a red cover on your gear box, just let them know. They custom make some internal parts for your unit, Its not your basic cheap rebuilders.
Hey thanks guys. The answers I was looking for Stanger actually called me back and we had a long chat about where to start. He convinced me to take measurements to see how worn it was and go ahead and crack it open to inspect the parts. Basically before spending money to rebuild it, check to see if its even rebuildable. So I’ll be doing that today. First time to do this, so I’ll let you all know. If it needs rebuilt, which it almost certainly will, I look into doing it myself or Red Head.
I remember a year ago or so reading a website that offered rebuilds of steering boxes and had a big long description of why it’s best to do a total overhaul and replace the bearings and everything rather than just squirt in some grease and tighten it down. Is that stanger site or was that someone else? I’m going to be digging through the search results since I’m getting my box rebuilt fairly soon, so if someone else doesn’t know the answer offhand, I’ll know soon enough and will try and remember to post it on this thread
Thanks. Yeah the stanger site is full of good info. I started to tear it down yesterday. I also called red head steering, and they can either rebuld yours or just do a core exchange on one thats ready to go. Exchange is 245.00 Cant go wrong with that.
Marcus Anghel (azscj428@gmail.com) can do a concourse quality rebuild. He is located in Scottsdale, AZ. He will rebuild YOUR box and return it with a new rag joint. When I got mine back, it looked so good it was disappointing to bury it in the engine compartment.
Use Marcus or ChokoStang ( http://www.chockostangclassicmustang.com/ ). Stanger (Randy?) will keep your parts for a minimum of 6 months–and up to a year–before you get them back after dozens of unanswered calls, messages, and emails. He does a good job, but using him is too frustrating on many levels.
We may as well compare pricing if there is a number of possible vendors. Having said that though, some probably provide better quality than others. Guessing the custom sized ball bearings servicing that Redhead uses are not used by all (or even most?) vendors.
I think he would have to see the condition of your box to give a fair price. Natural finish, paint markings, and bearing lash setup. You are getting your box and tag returned to you. Turnaround is 4 to 6 weeks.
I might give him a call. I have no interest in concourse restoration on it, this box just needs to be built / set-up right and safe since its going in my drag car.
As for redhead…
Ive been dealing with red head and its been a horrible experience so far. In fact im thinking of writing the manager/owner there. Ive dealt with what sounds like a “kid” on the phone. He gave me a price on the first call…then called back and said nevermind, we are going to need to need the part number. I texted the “kid” a part number like he asked and he never called back. 24 hours later I called the number he gave me, he acted like I wasnt supposed to call that number, wondering who I was and how I got it. He finally rememberd me, forgot the steering box, and what it was again. I had to explain 3 times it was a MANUAL box. Hell one time he said “so this is on a 1 ton?” After the call he said he’d call back and I’ve yet to hear from them.
Those are around $750, no? And you have to modify the column to fit it? I am referring to the power box conversion, maybe you mean the manual type (which until I saw your post and looked into it I did not know of)? Cheapest I could find on that was $360, so not really cheaper (but maybe better just the same).
I don’t know the exact price because I had Marcus do a few other things while I was trying to decide manual or power. If I had to guess for the steering box only, it probably was in the 300-400 range.
Manual type. $370 IIRC. No mods to fit. Better than factory or the “rebuild” I purchased before the Borgeson box. Or the flaming river racks I attempted to install that didn’t fit.
