Yup, just looked, the undercover 2 will not fit where I thought they would
Hmmm, do they require much tweaking to fit the cougar?
I have had good luck in past cars firing subwoofers into the rear seat back. One solution Iāve thought about is buying one of those aftermarket sheet metal panels that seals off the trunk, and then mounting subs in that. That way you donāt even have to cut up the car, and those panels seem like a good idea anyway to keep spilled fuel in the trunk in an accident.
Yep, but i just ordered the empty kick panels off ebay and used my own 6.5ā speakers of choice.
The panels are great and are a perfect fit. Only thing I dont like is that driverās side speaker bulge now blocks my wiper/washer foot pedal so Iām going to fabricate a simple metal plate attached at 90 degrees off of the original and then Iāll be able to still press foot down up in that corner and use w/w again.
If I remember correctly, I notched ,bent and welded the wiper pedal to clear not only the speaker but the high beam switch. Thank God it didnāt have a clutch pedal too
Thanks, that sounds good too. And now I see Iām not the only one who did the lower speakers, but still wants to use their w/w pedal, especially because Iām restoring that whole system and even found a nice Mercury man washer tank cap to finish it off.
I couldnāt imagine a clutch in the picture too. I dont think Iāve ever owned a car with smaller sized and too close together gas & brake pedals. Is not like I have clown size feet or something, but Iām still catching my shoe sometimes on edge of the wrong pedal.
For the kick panels keep in mind that the 67-68 panels are a very different size and shape from the 69-70 panels. They do not interchange.

This example has nice wood burl but the chrome is patchy.
How to restore the chrome on an XR-7 radio bezel?
Careful masking and chrome paint works great! The finish wonāt come out as shiny as a mirror, but imo it actually looks better that way.
Whatās your interior chrome paint recommendation?
Also what works is chrome finish paint markers. They carry them in art supply and some on AMZN. There are many sized width heads available and you can get incredible results that are much more as chrome than any spray paint. Silver leaf as I use in scale car model building, but not so well suited to a real car environment for durability. Iāve used the chrome paint markers for years with mostly good results. Theyāre very well suited to linear strips of chrome as well as restoring small emblems too. but if not skilled with it then will require some practice and a steady hand. if you dig around on youtube youāll find many guys with how toās, real time work and the results.
Is this what you mean by chrome finish paint markers?
Since right now I have only a bezel bottom half, I can practice on that before finishing the whole used bezel Iāll be buying.

Hi, yes those are the ones. There are varying levels of quality out there, art supply house etc. but those if nothing else will allow you to practice first. I think Iāve used some cheap ones off AMZN before but for small scale model car chrome. As I mentioned, some familiarity and skill goes a long way here, because flowing it properly in smooth strokes makes all the difference. It somewhat needs a heavier bead type result, it almost resembles a stretched out bead of mercury and is not something where you can just keep going back over it again as it will ruin that desired chrome finish. Donāt forget to search youtube because thereās alot of guys with great videos over the years on successfully doing many parts with these.
So I have been going though the various posts and see that people have been posting their projects as they progress, mine is almost complete. Once I organize my pictures I am going to have a thousand pictures of disrepair, disassembly, metal cut out metal welded back in. Is anyone interested in seeing that, do I just post a few pictures and add a drop box link instead? Not sure what to do to be honest, I am excited to share though. Might be a winter project organizing all the photos.
Uploading the pictures here would be best so they donāt disappear in the future.
I have had two Custom Auto Sound receivers and they both left a bad taste in my mouth.
The first one was maybe 15 years ago. I had the whole system mocked up on a table in my living room running off a 12 volt power supply I bought for that purpose. I noticed that there was an annoying electronic-sounding beeping coming from the unit. It kind of sounded like ādeedle deedle deedleā. When I called them and made my deedle-deedle-deedle impersonation of the sound the technician stopped me and said, you can just call it digital noise we are aware of the problem and weāre working on it. I was flabbergasted. I asked him how it was they knew they were shipping radios with a known defect. He made some excuse about, honestly I donāt remember his BS. I asked about warranty and he said they would exchange my radio beyond warranty once they found the source of the problem and corrected it because it was a known issue. I didnāt trust them and made plans to return the radio before the warranty ran out. When I went to return it they had the problem resolved so I made the exchange.
That radio never made it into the car. It was the model that controlled a six disc cd player in the trunk and by that time I favored the idea of a receiver that accepted a thumbdrive. They had a current, top line model that had usb input which I have in the car now and it has failed on me. It hardly has any playing time on it and the volume only goes up about 1/4 of the way and then no more. I can barely even hear it with car running.
I suppose itās not the end of the world since you donāt have to cut anything up to install the head unit so when it fails, and I predict it will, you can simply make a better choice. Or replace the Custome Auto Sound receiver every couple of years.
There is another brand Iām planning on trying. Like Custom Auto Sound, they make a shaft mounted receiver that fits the non-standard shape of my ā68 bezel, and installs without needing to modify the car itself. I found the brand in one of my many vendor catalogs, maybe Paddock or NPD, I donāt remember. If memory serves, Crutchfield also carried the brand.
TLDR: Iām 0 for 2 with CAS and I consider their stuff to low quality.
Thanks for sharing this, and sorry to hear that. Iām not saying this head unit is like my ā80s Japanese quality-level audio products, but for my purposes for this car and the super clean OEM style install I couldnāt be happier, let alone the bonus features it has. With the Pioneer speakers I chose and on FM or BT even w/o an external amp it sounds great. and I cant remember which rn, but she gave me $35 off plus a 3 or 4yr warranty on it to. Have to say also that I really enjoyed installing the whole system because it stirred up good memories of the days with my best friends back when were teens, early 20s always running 1st thing in each car we picked up doing a system install.
The brand I was trying to recall is Retro Sound, which is mentioned earlier in this thread. Glad youāre having good luck with CAS but for me going back would be like letting Lucy hold the ball for me to kick. Still, maybe this time itāll be different. And as Iām lying flat on my back Custom Auto Sound says, āSame time next year, Charlie Brown?ā
If youāre still looking for good leather, look up Spinneybeck in New York. My ā68 XR7 interior is done in Spinneybeck and itās some awesome leather. They donāt do the covers; they just sell leather. And you have to buy half a cow at a time, but itās worth it.
