STRIKER SCREWS

Hey folks, I’ve been trying to remove the striker screws on 68 Cougar. I’ve got one screw broke loose, however it is really tight and the others I just can’t break loose. Any secrets to removing them?

I use a heavy duty #4 Phillips tip in a socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar. Spray both front and back side with penetrating oil before trying. It usually breaks them loose but occasionally I have to drill the heads.

They are actually a Pozi Drive screw, not a regular Phillips. Different angles in the slots.

You can usually find a Pozi Drive bit in one of the variety bit kits. I believe a #3 will work, but a #4 is the correct size (IIRC).

Wow! That might help. I never noticed they were Pozi screws. Time to get a new set of APEX bits.

Thanks folks! I’ll give it a shot. Royce, if I have to drill them out, did you use a special kind of easy out?

I drilled the head with drills in successively larger sizes from #21 up to 5/16”. When the head popped off I drilled with a #10 bit. It grabbed and spun the screw out the back of the plate.

I use an impact driver and it works every time. I have never had to drill one out. And I am dealing with northeast rust on top of it.

I have some you won’t get out. Somebody painted them on.

Success! I used a combination of a 1/2 drive breaker bar and a hand impact tool and a series of different bits. Searched all over town for a pozidriv bit, with no luck. I had the best luck with the hand impact. After hammering several times, I then used a pipe wrench on the hand impact which gave a better grip because of the weight of the impact. Thanks for all of your help! You guys are the best and this forum is great help!

Impact drivers like that is a must for anyones toolbox! Not something you use every day but when you need it your thankful you have it in your arsenal.

I got mine in a bit kit at Harbor Freight. I think that #3 Pozi bit is about the only thing I use out of that kit, LOL!
