Stripping Paint

My 70 Cougar’s paint is starting to chip off since the previous paint job on it did not have primer under the paint and was just sprayed to the metal. I was wondering what materials I would need to start stripping the paint off and getting it ready for primer. Thanks.

Depends on how you want to strip the paint off? Chemical, sanding or media blast. if it’s chipping off easy my suggestion first is to try a high pressure washer. You might peel a lot of it off with a washer.

Personally, I like chemical stripping. Not dust.

First make a decision as to how much paint will be removed, 1 fender, 1 door or the whole car this would give you more info to make the best decision.

If it is peeling from bare metal, try a razor blade to remove most of the paint. It’s non-toxic and cheap, but somewhat time-consuming. Try it first, and see how it goes.

Going to start with just doing the hood first as that is where the chipping is the worst. Thanks for the replies. Any more recommendations would be appreciated.

Posting a picture of the peeling paint would help in guiding you in what direction to take (see link below). Make sure you use a etching or epoxy primer on bare metal as the first step before re-painting. The chipping paint could be from not using an activator in the paint causing it to chip easy.
