Styled steel wheel paint?

Have the original wheels for my 70 Eliminator but the guy repainted them. He did a very nice job, but I wasn’t happy with the color. I had some wheel paint here, I think from John’s, looks great, but is very glossy. In order to be correct this I think I will have to tone it down with a satin clear. Am I correct in my thinking? My memory is vague on this.

I have been using Motorcraft Argent Spray paint to refinish the interior of my rear taillights ( 1969 Cougar ) - the match is VERY good to the original satin gray-silver color. Also for the silver finish on my 1971 T-bird front marker/signal lights ( it’s used on the exterior for part of the clear plastic lens ) - again the match is near perfect. The paint smells like it should ( i.e. - high VOC ), dries quickly, smooth finish, no runs, good coverage and a nice consistent coat with an even distribution of the silver ‘grain’. I haven’t used it on wheels, but from what I’d read on the Mustang Forums ( where I first learned about it ) - that’s what it was being used for. Here’s a screen shot from the Motorcraft website:

Yes, the custom match argent wheel paint that John sells is the right color, and very high quality paint. But it is a bit too glossy. I actually like the glossier look enough that I stuck with it, but glad to know there is something out there in a satin.

That Argent paint is NOT the same as what was used on the Cougar wheels. It is way too shiny silver.
The wheels are more of a Dark Argent, as seen in Calicat’s pic.

Just for color and gloss comparison, wheel on left was refinished with the custom match John sells, and wheel on right is my original spare. Color is dead-on, but original was less shiny. I love the look of these wheels - just wish all 4 of mine were still round.

I wonder how much of the loss in gloss is simply due to age.

I wondered the same thing. I remember them being satin finish like my spare. But by the time I started noticing these wheels as a kid, they were already old enough to have faded some.
